After a turbulent few years, holidaymakers are now beginning to return to Turkey In 2017, Turkey’s tourism industry grew by around 18.9%, and indications suggest this summer will see this growth continue, helping the country get back to the tourism figures it saw in 2014.
It’s no wonder, really, that tourists are returning to Turkey in droves! After all, it’s a country of rich history, mouth-watering traditional cuisine and stunning scenery, from beaches and mountains to vibrant cities. If you’ve considered a trip to Turkey or are looking to return after a few years of holidaying elsewhere, we’ve found the perfect reasons to tempt you!
Located on the beautiful southwestern coast of Turkey, known as the Turquoise Coast, Dalaman is a stunning beach holiday destination. The Dalaman region has a lot to offer visitors looking for sun, sea and sand, and is a great gateway to other Turkish resorts Marmaris, the ancient city of Kaunos and Fethiye. Book your Dalaman airport transfer with Get4trip and arrive happy!
Turkey is blessed with spectacular beaches, with one of the most beautiful considered to be Ölüdeniz in the Fethiye district. A protected beauty spot, the blue lagoon of Ölüdeniz is a firm favourite with visiting tourists. It’s the perfect location for a lazy day at the beach and admiring the view, however, if you’re looking for something a bit more fast-paced, try the tandem paragliding, parasailing or canoeing on offer nearby.
Turkey is home to some of the world’s most famous historical ruins and monuments, which can be traced back to the country’s most well-known rulers – the Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. History buffs would benefit from a trip to the ancient port city of Ephesus, where you can find ancient ruins and the former site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Meanwhile, Istanbul is full of markers of the country’s history, such as the iconic Hagia Sophia and the 17th-century Blue Mosque, sitting alongside glimpses of the future of the city.
Local tavernas are the perfect setting to try some traditional Turkish cuisine, ranging from succulent Mezze and fresh seafood to köfte and olive oil drizzled vegetables. There’s something for all tastes and dishes change slightly depending on the region. While out and about make sure you sample pide, a boat-shaped flatbread topped with cheese, meats or vegetables, and often called ‘Turkish Pizza’. If you ask us, it’s the perfect fuel for a day of sightseeing! Top it off with a traditional Turkish coffee, served strong and thick and often with a piece of Turkish Delight or baklava on the side.
Bazaars and markets continue to be a big part of the way of life in Turkey and wandering around one can be a great way to experience some authentic Turkish culture while bagging yourself a bargain. The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the oldest and largest shopping centres in Turkey with 3,000 stalls selling everything from carpets and leather goods to fine jewellery. Just down the hill from here, you’ll find the Spice Bazaar where you can pick up exotic spices, coffee, nuts and dried fruit to take home with you.
Whether you’re in a resort or one of the big cities, Turkey has a vibrant nightlife to suit all requirements. In the resorts such as Marmaris and Bodrum, you’ll find bars and clubs aplenty, many offering happy hours and traditional Turkish entertainment – belly dancing. In the bigger cities, such as Istanbul and Antalya, you’ll find a wide range of entertainment, from stylish jazz bars to huge nightclubs. In the capital, grab a beer in one of the many bars lining the banks of the Bosphorus and enjoy your drink with a view.
Whether you’re looking for a lively, energetic beach holiday or a peaceful city break, Turkey has it all!
